5 Sep 2007 - Autumn Term Newsletter 1

AUTUMN TERM NEWSLETTER 1

Dear Parents and Friends
A sincere and warm welcome to the many new parents to St Peter's School. I hope you will very soon feel part of our school family and will wish to participate in the many activities to which you are invited. To our well established parents, welcome back. We look forward to your continued valuable support during the year. It will be greatly appreciated.

WELCOME MR STIRLING
We are delighted to welcome Mr Stirling to the school as our new Deputy Headteacher, and teacher of the children of Pewtor 2 class. He has much to offer the school and I am confident that he will very quickly establish himself as a vital part of the St Peter's family. I am sure that you join with the rest of the school in wishing him an enjoyable and successful time at St Peter's School.

MRS DOIDGE
As many of you will know, Mrs Doidge has not really been well for some time. Regrettably, she is unable to return to school at the present and there is some doubt about whether she will return in the future. We are are all immensely disappointed and continue to pray for her recovery. I know this will be particularly disappointing for the families of children that have just joined us in Brentor class. Until we are clear about the future, the class will be taught by Miss Charlesworth, a teacher who has previously successfully taught this age group at St Peter's, and who I am confident will give these children an excellent start to their junior education.

COMMUNICATIONS
During the next few days you should receive a number of documents designed to further improve the ethos, opportunities and standards within the school. We hope you will take time to read them, discuss them with your child(ren) and where necessary, respond promptly.

i) Home-School-Child Agreement We are required to invite you and your child to commit yourselves to signing this agreement and returning one copy to school as soon as possible.

ii) Club Activities.
We will once again be offering an excellent range of after school activities for the children. Please note the addition of a Homework Club this term.

iii) Behaviour In School
We strive to encourage a high standard of behaviour and courtesy in school and have produced a booklet for pupils and parents outlining our expectations in this area. The children will be looking at this with their teachers shortly, after which we expect them to bring the booklets home for you to read. PLEASE help us reinforce the simple rules and guidelines contained in it. When a child fails to maintain the high standards of behaviour we expect, we will be notifying the parent very promptly and trust that we can count on your support. Sadly, within many areas of society, what many regard as bad language has become accepted as normal and acceptable. This is not the case at St Peter's and we will not accept children swearing or blaspheming in school. Please help us to maintain good standards of speech, by likewise, not accepting it at home. Thank you.

iv) Helping Your Child with Maths
This leaflet will highlight the 'key objectives your child should be focussing on this term. It will also contain some activities you could do with your child to help improve his/her skills.

iv) Homework
A copy of our homework policy will be sent home and each child will have his/her own Homework Diary.

v) An outline of the termly work to be covered in the main curricular areas.

vi) Invitation to the St Peter's Association Annual General Meeting

CARNIVAL SUCCESS
We were all thrilled at the end of last term when the St Peter's Carnival Float was judged to be the Best in the Artistic class and most rewarding of all, the Best in Procession. We must congratulate Mrs Collacott and her wonderful team for their inspiration and extremely hard work. All the children that were on the float are to be commended for their good spirit and behaviour throughout what was a very long evening for them. If anyone has any good photographs of the occasion and could let us have any copies we'd be very grateful.

NAMES AND POSSESSIONS
PLEASE ensure your child's clothing, shoes, lunch boxes, etc. are clearly named. Hopefully, we can then keep the Lost Property Box empty and everyone happy!

COMMUNICATION BY E-MAIL
We are only too well aware that communication by 'pupil post' does not always work as well as we would like it to! If you have access to and regularly use e-mail, with your agreement, we are happy to send out most letters electronically. If you are happy for us to do this, please return your current e-mail address on the reply slip and ensure we are informed of any changes. This will not be necessary if you already receive your newsletters in this way.

PARENTS' QUESTIONNAIRE
Many thanks to the 56 families who kindly completed and returned the questionnaire at the end of last term. The results are very pleasing, showing a very high level of satisfaction with the work of the school. These will be published with the next newsletter.

HELP!
As a staff we are most grateful for the number of parents and friends who regularly come into school to assist in many ways. This is reflected in the increased attention, opportunities and encouragement the children can receive. We are hoping to establish a strong team of 'Bookworm Helpers' to become involved across the school, listening to children talk about the books they have read. You may have a skill or talent to pass on to the children ... simple needlework, art, pottery, sports, etc., regularly assist in maintaining the library organisation, or be willing to help with one of the club activities. If you are willing to help in any of these areas, or others not mentioned, please complete the reply slip and return as soon as possible. We will then contact you. Thank you.

As you are probably aware, we are required to undertake checks through the Criminal Records Bureau prior to allowing other adults to work with children in school, and I trust you will be understanding of this. All volunteers will need complete this simple form, which is available from Mrs Bassett, to whom it should be returned, in the school office. Your responses are completely confidential. We are only advised of the outcome where there is a criminal record.

CONTACT WITH TEACHERS
We always welcome the opportunity to meet with parents and need to be informed of concerns regarding any child. However, it would be much appreciated if you could avoid the period 8.50 - 9.00 when teachers are busy preparing for the day. A message can always be left in the office, which will be passed on. If possible please telephone or send a note so that we can arrange a convenient time. Thank you.

CARS ON DRIVEWAY
For the children's safety, PLEASE do not bring your car into the school drive to drop off or collect your child. At both ends of the day the entrance can become dangerously congested, particularly when the buses are around. Please let the children have a little walking exercise from Tamar Avenue! Could I also ask that when parking near either entrance, you avoid blocking any of our neighbour's driveways. Thank you. I would be grateful if you would regularly reinforce in your child's mind the need for a sensible approach to road safety at all times, and particularly when travelling to and from school.

EARLY ARRIVALS/LATE ARRIVALS/EARLY DEPARTURES!
Children should not arrive at school before 8.40 a.m. If your child arrives late, or needs to leave school during the school time, it is essential that he/she reports to the school office to 'sign in or out'. For their own safety, children will not be permitted to leave the school premises between 9.00 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. unless collected by a parent or prearranged other responsible adult.

SCHOOL DINNERS
At the beginning of each Monday morning the teacher will put any dinner money in a cash tin to be forwarded to Mrs Bassett in the office ... therefore it is essential that money is contained in a sealed, named envelope or money bag. The cost is £8.75 per week, £56 for the first half term or £124.25 for the full Autumn term. I can thoroughly recommend the 'Fresh Start' meals and with some encouragement most children are willing to try and in most cases, enjoy the exciting meals on offer. If your child hasn't had school meals for a while, the start of a school year might be a good time to try them again. A menu will be sent home as soon as we receive it from the caterers.
If you are in receipt of Income Support or Income Based Jobseeker's Allowance you may be entitled to free school meals for your child(ren). Please ask Mrs Bassett for an application form. Even if you don't take up the meals I would encourage you to at least have authorisation for them, as some of our school funding is based on the number of children entitled to free meals. The children don't have to take the meals for us to have a case for receiving additional funds!

FRUIT AND MILK
Children are welcome to bring a piece of fruit to school to eat during the morning break. Drinks may be purchased from the school kitchen .... Milk 10p, or milkshake, apple juice and orange juice, all 15p.

ABSENCES
May I remind you that we must be informed of the reason for any child's absence during school time. A telephone call on the first day of absence is most welcome, or failing that, a short note explaining the reason for absence on the child's return. Thank you.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS
It is essential that should the need arise we can contact you as quickly as possible, or if a child is unwell at school there is someone to whom he/she can go. Please ensure we are kept informed of any changes in emergency contacts, places of work, telephone numbers, addresses, doctors, etc.

SCHOOL SHOP
Some of the older children run a school shop through which are sold pencils, crayons, erasers, sharpeners, pens, rulers, etc. at very reasonable prices. This will be open on alternate Wednesdays, starting on 19th September.

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
We are planning to take the whole school to the Theatre Royal in Plymouth to see this acclaimed touring production on Tuesday 2nd October. I hope you will be agreeable to your child(ren) taking part. We need to ask for a voluntary contribution of £13 per child to cover the cost of a ticket, coach travel and an ice cream. No child will be prevented from going if the full, or even no contribution is made. However, please bear in mind that unless we can meet the costs involved, it will put in jeopardy any future excursions. Please return the permission slip as soon as possible and send your contribution in to school by Thursday 27th September. Thank you. I will let you have more details regarding times, in the next newsletter.
