15 Oct 2007 - Autumn Term Newsletter 3
AUTUMN TERM NEWSLETTER 3
Monday 15th October
Dear Parents and Friends
ST PETER'S ASSOCIATION
My sincere thanks to those who came along to the annual meeting. The following have very kindly agreed to form the committee.
Chair : Mrs Greep
Secretary : Mrs Abel
Treasurer : vacant
Teachers : Mrs Stevens, Mrs Doidge
Committee Members : Miss Brinkhurst, Mrs Doyle, Mrs Nichols, Mrs Hainsworth
As you will see, we do have a vacancy on the committee which we are very keen to fill. If you feel able to help out as treasurer please do send in the reply slip at the end of this letter. The committee meets about once every half term, usually at the end of a school day for a little over an hour. It is quite an informal arrangement where we discuss and plan a variety of social and fund-raising events through the year.
The first committee meeting for this year will take place on Wednesday 31st October at 3.40 p.m., for all who can make it. We would love to hear from anyone with novel fund-raising ideas.
DEVON AIR AMBULANCE - Tomorrow - 16th October
Each year we undertake a fund raising appeal on behalf of a charity. This year we are supporting the work of the Devon Air Ambulance and would ask that you seriously consider helping us raise funds for this very worthy cause. A representative of the organisation will be talking to the children next Tuesday, explaining their work and how they are totally dependent on donations. Children will bring home a 'Heli Bag' into which we hope you and family and friends might put a donation. The bags need to be returned to school by Tuesday 30th October (just after the half term break)
SCHOOL SHOP - Wednesday 17th Open from 1.00 p.m. for pens, pens, notebooks, crayons, etc.
BRENTOR WORSHIP - Thursday 18th
Brentor class are to lead our morning worship, when you are warmly invited to join us. We aim to start at 9.15 a.m.
BUNS AND BISCUITS - Next Friday - 19th October
10.30 a.m. Our monthly Bun and Biscuit Stall for the children will be open. Buns 20p. Biscuits 10p. Proceeds go to the St Peter's Association. We are grateful to Mrs Nichols for co-ordinating this who I'm sure would be delighted to receive donations of suitable items on the day.
SCHOOL BAND
Our brass and guitar tutor Mr Gray has once again kindly offered to organise a school band to prepare a musical piece or two for Christmas. All who can play at least a few notes on an instrument will be welcome ... brass, woodwind, violin, guitar, or indeed, any other instruments. The group will meet at school each Thursday morning at 8.15 a.m., for about 30 minutes of practice. This will commence on Thursday 1st November. There will be a charge of just £5 per child for the half term. Please don't send any money in yet as we will invoice you towards the end of term. If you have not already requested a place, please return the reply slip if you would like your child(ren) to participate.
MR EVES - Tavistock College - Thursday 1st November - 4.00 p.m.
Parents of our years 5 and 6 children are warmly invited and encouraged to come and hear Mr Eves (The Principal) speak about life at the College. It will be a good opportunity to learn about the College and ask questions prior to selecting a place at or transferring to the College.
EAR-RINGS/STUDS
Could I remind you that the only permissible ear studs are those that lie flat against the ear, with no likelihood of them being caught on anything. For P.E. activities they must be removed. This is Devon County policy. (Although we realise for the first few weeks after ear-piercing they need to remain in place.)
P.E. KIT
Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit in school for the days when physical activities are undertaken (black shorts and white t-shirt for indoor P.E.)
ABSENCES
We are required to maintain accurate records of the reason for all pupil absences. If we have not been given a reason within two weeks, our administrative computer automatically produces a letter requesting this information. Please reply to this promptly. If no reply is forthcoming, the absence(s) will be recorded as unauthorised.
CARS IN THE SCHOOL TURNING CIRCLE
Sadly, there are a small number of car drivers who regularly drop off or collect children from the school turning circle or driveway. PLEASE DO NOT DO SO. The circle MUST be kept clear for authorised vehicles only. When parking in Greenlands estate or on Deer Park Crescent PLEASE ensure you leave the residents' access to their driveways clear. Thank you.
To reduce the number of cars in the school area at the beginning and end of the school day please consider
- Car sharing, where more than one child comes from the same locality. Perhaps arrange a rota of drivers.
- Where possible, allow your child to walk to and from school, preferably with another child or small group.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
We expect delivery of the children's photographs any day now. The cost and details for payment will be included within the photo packs. Please pay for or return unwanted packs promptly, and certainly by Thursday 8th November at the very latest. Thank you.
HOMEWORK
Our school council are undertaking a survey of parents views about homework for children. Please would you spend a few minutes considering this and return the form you should have received to school as soon as possible. They will no doubt analyse the results and I trust will feed back to you in due course.
HALF TERM HELP PLEASE
If anyone can spare a little time over the half term break to complete some autumn outdoor tasks we would be immensely grateful
- prune and tidy the 'kitchen garden'
- clear the paths of encroaching brambles in the nature area.
- tidy and cut back around the pond
TEACHING and/or MEAL TIME ASSISTANTS
We occasionally have need of someone to stand in for one of these posts, to support children in lesson time in the mornings, or to supervise children over the lunch break (12.30 - 1.35 p.m.). If you might be interested in helping out on a paid basis, would you kindly let me know. Thank you.
DINNER MONEY for the next half term is £68.25
SECONDARY SCHOOL PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
In the past the Local Authoruty has distributed leaflets to year 6 parents regarding Examination Results and other Achievements in Devon Schools. This will no longer be done, but I have been asked to advise you that this information is available online at www.devon.gov.uk/exam_results or printed copies are available by telephoning 01392 382696
TESCO SPORT for SCHOOLS VOUCHERS
Thank you so much to everyone who is collecting these on our behalf. Please keep them coming in.
(Also Nestle Books for Schools tokens, used postage stamps, unwanted spectacles and old mobile phones!)
Yours sincerely
